Oakville, Ontario – The arrival of Fall not only brings bright colours to neighbourhood trees, it also often heralds the arrival of the annual flu season. It’s important for everyone to do their part to help prevent the spread of influenza and other infectious illnesses which can have serious consequences for older seniors, including those living in Ontario’s retirement homes.

Wash your hands

Hand hygiene – either through hand washing or use of hand sanitizers – is considered among the most effective ways to prevent the spread of illnesses such as influenza. Wash your hands frequently, including before and after your visit to a retirement home.

If you’re not feeling well, delay your visit to a family member or friend

It’s important for you to consider delaying your visit to a friend or loved one in a retirement home if you are feeling unwell yourself, especially if you have a worsening cough and/or a fever.

Consider getting vaccinated

Vaccination is a personal choice, though those who work directly with seniors and with people with compromised immune systems are strongly encouraged to get the a flu shot each year. Speak to your family doctor or check with your local public health department about how to get this year’s flu shot.
